Know your Fisherwoman

Hello there! My name is Aurora Schein and I’m the owner of Artemis Fish co. Every Summer I travel to Alaska to fish on my boat the F/V Artemis in a little corner of the Bering Sea known as Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay is the confluence of 5 major river systems which create a remarkably unique ecosystem, attracting the largest natural Sockeye salmon run in the world. As you can see I’m not alone in this endeavor, in fact I’m lucky to enough to have many friends and a life partner (Noah, seen above) all of whom run boats in the summer and return to the lower 48 during our off season to bring wild-caught Alaskan Sockeye to your doorstep. All our fish is plunged into 32 degree water as soon as it lands on the boat and then processed for consumption within hours at Leader Creek Fisheries Processing facility in Naknek, AK. There it is flash frozen and vacuum sealed using state of the art filleting, freezing and packaging equipment before being shipped frozen to California where it is my pleasure to distribute it to you here at one of our local meet-ups.

I wasn’t born into a fishing family but came into the industry as an adult 8 years ago. I experimented, working in many different fisheries throughout Alaska as well as commercial diving for Sea cucumbers, before finally buying my own boat and founding Artemis Fish Co. I’ve found overcoming the challenges associated with commercial fishing to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life and the community to be one of unparalleled comradery and kindness. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to us, your local fisher folk, and I can only hope the quality of our fish reflects the joy we take in catching them.

Know Your Fish

Now that you know me, let me introduce you to my friend, the Sockeye. Besides being delicious, wild-caught Alaskan Sockeye is one of the most nutrient dense foods you can include in your diet. Unlike farmed fish, wild Sockeye feed on a 100% natural marine diet, giving them their deep red color and exceptional nutritional profile. Rich in high quality protein and loaded with Omega-3 Fatty Acids and anti-oxidants, Sockeye support heart health, and brain function as well as helping to fight inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. To protect this amazing natural resource, sometimes called “red gold”, Alaska maintains some of the strictest fishing regulations in the world, ensuring healthy fish populations and environmentally responsible practices. As people who rely on the environment to sustain our livelihood, there are none more invested than us fisher-folk in protecting and sustaining this natural resource so that it may bring health, joy, and prosperity for many future generations to come.
